I first came across the work of Gillian Blease last year when Andrew Pavitt came in to give us a talk. He showed us some of her work which influenced his own. I really liked the use of shape in her work and also the simplicity of the compositions. I gained a lot from Gillian Blease coming in to college and giving us a guest lecture. I found her transition from fine art to illustration interesting, and could relate to her dislike of fine art being more about the concepts rather than the visuals.
I was also interested in the way she talked about the use of space in her work. She tries to use as much empty space as possible to create more drama in the elements which are there. This also ensures that the compositions in her work are the best they can be. I’d like to take on board what Gillian said in my own work as I’ve been finding it hard to create compositions, I tend to make my designs very cluttered and this spoils the overall image. I’ve also began to look at Paul Rand to help me overcome this problem. http://www.gillianblease.co.uk/

Hi Jenny,
Good to see that you have made a start posting on your Blog. It would be great to see you start posting your own work on here too to see you making connections and reflecting on your current projects.
